SpaceX Launches European Weather Satellite MTG-S1 on July 1st – A New Milestone in Atmospheric Monitoring

SpaceX Successfully Launches MTG-S1 Weather Satellite — EDUP Continues to Follow Cutting-Edge Tech Applications

At 5:03 p.m. EDT on July 1st (5:03 a.m. Beijing time, July 2nd), SpaceX successfully launched the MTG-S1 (Meteosat Third Generation Sounder 1) aboard a Falcon 9 rocket from Launch Complex 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The booster used was B1085-9, and first stage recovery was planned via the drone ship Just Read The Instructions stationed downrange.

MTG-S1, developed by the European Space Agency (ESA) and EUMETSAT, is Europe’s second third-generation meteorological satellite. With a launch mass of 3,800 kg, it carries the first hyperspectral sounding instrument ever placed in Geostationary Orbit by a European-led mission. The satellite also includes the Copernicus Sentinel-4A payload, which uses a UVN (Ultraviolet, Visible, Near-Infrared) spectrometer to monitor trace gases and aerosols in the atmosphere—vital for real-time air quality services and long-term climate protocol monitoring.
