SpaceX's Starlink Mini Dish Features a Built-In Wi-Fi Router

SpaceX releases the official specs of its Mini dish. The dish weighs approximately 3 pounds and has a single Ethernet connector.

SpaceX's official documentation confirms that the Starlink Mini dish does not have an external Wi-Fi receiver. Instead, SpaceX has built the router into the dish.

This information was taken directly from the official Mini dish spec sheet, and the setup guide posted secretly by Starlink.com. The documents reveal what consumers should expect from this product. SpaceX CEO Elon Musk says that the product will be released in a matter of months.

The Mini Dish is specifically described as "Starlink with WiFI integrated" in the specifications. Hardware will include a kickstand adapter for pipes, a direct-current power cable, a power source, and an adapter.

Starlink Mini dishes will be more mobile with the built-in Modem. Although the FCC's documents claim it is capable of WiFi 6, the hardware only supports WiFi 5 speeds.

Mini model, which is designed to be lighter, weighs only 2.4lbs. It can also weigh 3.4lbs with the kickstand and 49-foot DC cord attached. The Mini dish, which measures 11.75" by 10.2", is the size of a small laptop. As such, it can be easily tucked into a back pack, as was intended.

Mini dish uses less power due to its smaller size. It requires 25 watts, on average, as compared to the 75-100 watts required by the standard Starlink V4 dish.

The documents don't refer to using the Mini Dish with a portable power source. A single Ethernet port will be included next to power connector.

Even though the Mini dish has a smaller footprint, it is designed to endure outdoor weather. Starlink Mini can also operate in temperatures from -22degF up to 122degF. This model even comes with a snow melt feature. IP67 also means that it can survive 30 minutes submerged in up to three feet of water.

Musk said that the Mini dish is expected to cost "about half of the standard dish" which would suggest a price of $250 to $300, though perhaps at the cost of reduced performance. The company will first release the product in a few areas before expanding to other regions. SpaceX has not yet revealed how much the monthly internet charge will be and whether it will receive a discounted rate.
